Sophia Lee’s Global Adventure: A Journey of Self-Discovery
A Young Traveler’s Ambition
She set off traveling alone aged 13 – At just 13 years old, Sophia Lee embarked on her first solo journey, a decision that would shape her life and propel her toward an extraordinary goal: visiting every UN-recognized country in the world. Now 20, she is on the verge of achieving what many deemed impossible—becoming the youngest person to accomplish this feat. Her path, however, began with a single flight to Costa Rica, a destination that, she admits, was the catalyst for a life-changing expedition. While she never imagined that this trip would lead her to chase a record, Lee’s passion for exploration has since grown into a global mission.
The First Steps into the Unknown
Seven years ago, when Lee first left the United States to travel alone, she required written approval from her parents. This step, which might seem daunting, was manageable thanks to her family’s deep-rooted love for adventure. Her grandparents, former volunteers in the Peace Corps, had shared stories of their travels during her childhood, instilling in her a sense of curiosity and courage. “Growing up, I always felt a connection to the world through their tales,” Lee reflected. “It made the idea of traveling solo feel like a natural progression rather than a leap into the unknown.” The journey began in Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, where she immersed herself in the region’s natural beauty. Despite her social anxiety as a child, Lee found her confidence blossoming in the face of unfamiliar challenges. “I had to navigate everything by myself—dining in a foreign language, planning itineraries, and even dealing with the airport’s extra security measures,” she recalled. These steps, though initially nerve-wracking, became a source of pride. “They were probably just cautious,” she laughed, “but it made me feel like I was proving something.”
Pursuing the Dream Beyond the Horizon
After completing her high school diploma at 16, Lee faced a pivotal decision: pursue a degree in film or continue her travels. She chose the latter, driven by an insatiable desire to explore. Her homeschooling background provided the flexibility needed to balance education with globetrotting, allowing her to visit destinations like Egypt and Ecuador. During these trips, she often engaged in unique exchanges—teaching yoga in exchange for lodging or managing social media accounts for local businesses. “It wasn’t just about seeing the world,” she explained. “It was about learning from it and contributing in small ways.” Lee’s determination intensified when she learned of Lexie Alford’s record, set in 2019 at the age of 21 years and 177 days. “I didn’t think it was possible at first,” she admitted. “But the more I traveled, the more I realized that the world was within reach.” To qualify for the record, Lee had to meet strict criteria, including traveling via public transportation, using a tracking device, and revisiting countries she had already visited. The process required meticulous planning, and she quickly adapted to the demands of a life on the move.
A Challenging Path with Unyielding Passion
Her record attempt officially began in 2023 when she was 17, but it was briefly interrupted by a “family situation” that forced her to pause. “I had to take a step back, but that only deepened my resolve,” she said. Despite the setback, Lee resumed her travels in 2024, embarking on a continuous journey that has kept her away from home for over three years. “I’ve only seen my parents once since then,” she shared, noting that her sister occasionally joins her in accessible locations like Southeast Asia or South America. Europe became her first major destination, where she explored the United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, and Estonia. “It was the easiest and most affordable region to navigate,” she observed. “The public transport system was reliable, and the costs were manageable even on a tight budget.” To keep expenses low, Lee lived on an “extreme budget” of $100 per country, often opting for overnight buses and shared accommodations. “It forced me to be resourceful,” she said, highlighting how these constraints sharpened her adaptability. As her journey expanded into Asia and the Middle East, Lee encountered new challenges. From the bustling markets of Cairo to the serene temples of Kyoto, she adapted her approach, using social media to document her experiences and attract sponsorships. “Once people started to notice my story, things changed,” she said. “Brand partnerships and support from online communities eased the financial burden.” This shift allowed her to focus more on the cultural and personal growth aspects of her travels.
The Rewards of a Global Perspective
Reflecting on her travels, Lee emphasized the transformative power of connecting with people from diverse backgrounds. “Meeting individuals from different cultures has taught me the importance of empathy and open-mindedness,” she said. “It’s one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.” Her journey also gave her a unique perspective on the world, particularly in regions where she once felt like an outsider. “In Costa Rica, I was the youngest traveler, and that made me stand out,” she noted. “But it also made me feel like I was part of something bigger.” Lee’s pursuit of the record has not only defined her personal growth but also inspired others. “I want to show that age doesn’t limit what you can achieve,” she said. “Even if you’re just starting out, the world is waiting for you.” Her story, while unique, echoes the spirit of many young adventurers who defy traditional boundaries.
A Future Without Borders
As Lee approaches her goal, she remains focused on the next step. “I’ve visited 50 countries, but there’s still more to do,” she said. Her next challenge will involve revisiting these destinations and exploring the remaining 150 or so. “It’s not just about the number of countries,” she explained. “It’s about the stories I’ve collected and the people I’ve met along the way.” With her continued dedication, Lee hopes to set a new benchmark in the annals of travel records. “I never thought I’d be in this position at 20,” she admitted. “But every step has brought me closer to my dream.” Her journey serves as a reminder that the world is a vast and exciting place, and that even the youngest of adventurers can leave an indelible mark on it.
“I think that building self-confidence at a young age and going to these destinations to meet people from different cultures is one of the best experiences you can have as a young person.”
As she continues her travels, Lee remains grateful for the opportunities that have shaped her. From the Nicoya Peninsula to the bustling streets of Istanbul, her experiences have been a blend of challenges and triumphs. “Traveling alone has taught me resilience,” she said. “It’s also given me a deeper appreciation for the world’s diversity.” Her story is not just about breaking records—it’s about embracing a life of discovery and connection.
