The correspondence, which was secured by Democratic members of both the House and Senate Judiciary Committees and subsequently examined by CNN reporters, signals that the influential Republican leader is undertaking independent examination of Patel’s controversial expenditure patterns involving public funds.
Within a letter dated May 5, the senator directed Patel to compile a comprehensive inventory documenting every journey undertaken aboard an FBI aircraft. The inquiry specifically requests that the director disclose associated expenses and clarify whether each trip served personal or professional objectives. Should any journey qualify as personal in nature, Grassley wants confirmation that appropriate reimbursement has been made to the federal government. Additionally, the chairman seeks a thorough cost comparison examining the BMW vehicles purchased against equivalent Chevrolet Suburban models, along with detailed breakdowns covering fuel consumption and storage requirements.
Controversy Surrounds Olympic Trip
Patel has generated considerable public attention, particularly following the emergence of a widely circulated video capturing him consuming beer inside the Team USA men’s hockey team locker room. This footage surfaced after the Olympic gold medal contest concluded in February, prompting observers to question whether the director utilized FBI resources for what seemed like a fan’s leisure excursion. The FBI organization has consistently maintained that Patel’s presence in Milan served official purposes, noting that he participated in six public engagements and two classified meetings, which included discussions concerning Olympic security arrangements.
Through a social media publication, the FBI defended the director’s travel expenditures by asserting that the agency operates with greater efficiency and effectiveness across all dimensions. The organization further claimed that Patel’s personal travel expenses remained substantially lower than those incurred by his predecessors, Chris Wray and James Comey. Nevertheless, significant criticism has focused on the director’s employment of an FBI Gulfstream jet for personal journeys since assuming his position.
Historical Context and Regulatory Requirements
This particular criticism is not novel, having previously affected earlier FBI directors and attorneys general. Interestingly, Patel himself voiced concerns before his appointment regarding his predecessor’s utilization of the FBI aircraft. During a 2024 appearance on Glenn Beck’s podcast, the current director suggested the government jet should potentially be retired from service.
“Chris Wray doesn’t need a government-funded G-5 jet to go to vacation,” Patel stated at the time. “Maybe we ground that plane — $15,000 every time it takes off.”
However, similar to the situation facing Wray, Patel possesses limited flexibility regarding transportation methods. A governmental regulation established following the September 11 attacks mandates that the attorney general, and since 2011 the FBI director, must utilize government aircraft for all journeys, encompassing personal travel as well. According to the Justice Department, this policy exists because the president and other senior officials require reliable secure communication channels with the FBI director and attorney general during national security incidents or other emergencies.

Grassley has provided Patel until May 19 to submit his response to this voluntary inquiry. In his correspondence, the Republican senator highlighted previous instances where he investigated an FBI director’s financial practices. “For decades, regardless of which political party is in the White House, I have worked to ensure that taxpayers dollars are protected from waste, fraud, and abuse,” Grassley wrote in the letter.
The chairman’s investigation coincides with parallel efforts by House and Senate Democrats, who have initiated their own examination of Patel’s spending patterns, incorporating references to whistleblower testimonies. On Thursday evening, Grassley publicly criticized Democratic colleagues through his X platform, declaring: “My oversight is the same no matter the admin UNLIKE Dems who only seem interested in oversight when it benefits them politically.”
