Fetterman’s GOP Convention Video Highlights a Growing Democratic Divide

The roughly one-minute message introduced McCormick before he took the stage. Fetterman emphasized that his party registration has not changed, while presenting himself as a Democrat willing to break with his party when he believes its direction conflicts with his views.

“Yes, I’m a Democrat. Why am I here talking to you today? Because well, I’m a common sense Democrat. I’m always going to stand with America. I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life,” Fetterman said.

His appearance before a GOP gathering was a striking political moment for a first-term senator who has become one of the most visible internal critics of Democrats’ progressive flank. It also underscored the unusual relationship between Pennsylvania’s two senators, who belong to opposing parties but have publicly described their work as centered on the state’s interests.

Praise for McCormick and a Focus on Pennsylvania

Fetterman called McCormick a senator who delivers results and said he was proud to regard him as a friend. He later reinforced that message in a statement, saying that despite their political differences, both senators are “Team PA.”

McCormick, who followed the video onstage, warmly returned the praise and thanked Fetterman for his friendship, courage, and service to Pennsylvania.

“How great is John Fetterman, right?” McCormick said. “Thank you Senator Fetterman for your friendship, thank you for your courage and thank you for all you do for Pennsylvania.”

Fetterman also pointed to the steel industry and the communities tied to it in western Pennsylvania. He said he would work with President Donald Trump to protect what he described as the region’s steel way of life.

“We’ll work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life right here in the steel valley,” he said.

The comments fit Fetterman’s recent efforts to portray himself as an independent-minded Democrat on economic and national issues, particularly where he sees bipartisan cooperation as useful for Pennsylvania workers and industries.

Democratic Backlash in Pennsylvania

Some Pennsylvania Democrats quickly condemned Fetterman’s decision to participate in the Republican event. Rep. Chris Deluzio, who represents the state’s 17th Congressional District, mocked the senator for delivering his message by video rather than attending in person.

“Too lazy to do it in person. Checks out,” Deluzio wrote in a post on X.

The criticism came shortly after Fetterman had publicly pushed back against former aides who alleged that he had been disengaged from parts of his work and frequently missed constituent meetings.

State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, who ran against Fetterman in the 2022 Democratic Senate primary, also attacked the senator’s convention appearance.

“John is Benedict Arnold, but lazy. Could barely get off the couch in his million-dollar mansion to kiss Trump’s ring, he phoned it in like everything he does,” Kenyatta posted.

The reaction illustrated how sharply Fetterman divides opinion inside his own party. Supporters may view his conduct as evidence that he is willing to resist partisan expectations. Critics argue that his outreach to Republicans and repeated rebukes of Democratic positions weaken the party at a politically consequential time.

A Democrat With an Unusual Relationship to Trump

Fetterman has spent months separating himself from many fellow Democrats, especially on foreign policy and support for Israel. He has backed some of Trump’s nominees and supported the president’s military actions in the Middle East.

Strongly pro-Israel, Fetterman has said that he does not intend to leave the Democratic Party unless it formally becomes “anti-Israel.” His position has made him one of the most prominent Democratic defenders of Israel in Congress during a period of intense disagreement within the party over the Middle East.

He is widely seen as Trump’s closest Democratic ally on Capitol Hill, though the GOP convention video marked an especially public expression of that relationship. Fetterman skipped his own party’s 2024 convention, a decision that added to questions about his standing within Democratic politics.

Democratic Rep. Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania said the video reinforced a description he had used previously for Fetterman.

“A year ago I labeled John Fetterman ‘Trump’s favorite Democrat,’” Boyle posted on X. “Tonight, he yet again proves why.”

Fetterman Says He Will Remain a Democrat

After the convention appearance, Fetterman reiterated that he remains committed to the Democratic Party. He said that even if the Senate’s control changes after the November midterms, he would continue to serve as the vote he promised voters during his campaign.

“I’m a lifelong Democrat who votes overwhelmingly with my party – and should the Senate flip in November, I will still be the 51st vote than I ran on,” Fetterman said in a statement.

That assertion reflects the tension at the center of Fetterman’s political identity. He continues to identify as a lifelong Democrat and says he generally votes with his party, yet he has chosen increasingly visible moments to criticize its left flank and work alongside Republicans.

For Pennsylvania, the episode also places renewed attention on how its two senators may cooperate despite their ideological differences. Fetterman’s praise for McCormick focused on shared state interests rather than partisan agreement, particularly issues connected to workers, industry, and economic identity.
