Trump Warns UK Trade Deal ‘Can Always Be Changed’

During a conversation with Sky News, US President Donald Trump remarked that the trade agreement with the United Kingdom “can always be changed.” He added, “We gave them a good trade deal, better than I had to,” reflecting on the state of the longstanding alliance.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, particularly after Starmer declined to back the US-Israel military action against Iran in late February. Despite this, Trump noted that the relationship “has been better,” though he admitted it is now “sad.” When asked about the nature of their bond, he responded with a rhetorical question: “With who?”

“It’s the relationship where when we asked them for help, they were not there. When we needed them, they were not there. When we didn’t need them, they were not there. And they still aren’t there.”

The tensions between the leaders have grown in recent weeks, primarily due to disagreements over Middle Eastern policies. Trump has called Starmer’s approach to the conflict “no Winston Churchill,” highlighting his disappointment. Earlier in the discussion, Trump acknowledged liking Starmer but criticized his government’s handling of immigration and energy strategies as “insane.”

Despite these frustrations, Trump assured that the strained relationship would not overshadow the upcoming royal state visit. “I’ve known the King for a long time, and he’s not involved in that process,” he said. When asked about his anticipation for the visit, he replied, “Just being with him. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s wonderful.”

In May of the previous year, the UK became the first country to finalize a tariff agreement with Trump following his return to the presidency. This deal involved lowering import taxes on vehicles, aluminum, and steel. However, the recent discord over the Middle East has tested the foundation of their diplomatic ties.
