Manhunt after attempted arson attack on synagogue
Manhunt After Attempted Arson at London Synagogue
Police in north London are actively searching for two individuals following an attempted arson attack on the Finchley Reform Synagogue. The suspects, who were wearing balaclavas, arrived at the site around 01:00 BST and hurled a brick alongside two containers believed to hold petrol. Despite the threat, no damage or injuries were reported. The Metropolitan Police have classified the incident as a hate crime targeting the Jewish community.
Earlier this month, a separate arson incident targeted four ambulances linked to a Jewish charity, prompting counter-terrorism units to join the investigation. This latest attempt follows a pattern of attacks, with authorities emphasizing the growing concern among local residents. Sarah Sackman, the Labour MP representing Finchley and Golders Green, condemned the act, stating it represents a troubling escalation in hostility toward the community.
“This alarming act aims to intimidate a synagogue in our area, continuing a wave of targeted aggression against Jewish people,” Sackman remarked. “I will not let this situation become the standard for daily life. British Jews deserve to live freely, whether with their children in a nursery or at religious gatherings, without constant fear of attack.”
The Community Security Trust (CST), which oversees Jewish community safety and tracks antisemitism, confirmed its collaboration with police to support the synagogue. Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams highlighted the police’s commitment, noting: “We recognize the impact of this event on the community, especially after the recent arson in Golders Green. Our teams are working closely with local leaders and prioritizing the swift identification of those responsible.”
Williams urged the public to share any CCTV or dash cam footage that could aid the investigation. “We treat such incidents with the utmost seriousness and are determined to uncover the perpetrators,” he said.
