Cyclospora Outbreak Investigation: Taco Bell’s Response to Contaminated Produce

According to a source familiar with the investigation, the shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms has been identified as a potential culprit. This intestinal illness, caused by a microscopic parasite, is experiencing a significant surge across the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published data on Tuesday showing nearly 7,000 cases confirmed or under investigation since May 1. These confirmed cases represent more than six times the number recorded at this time last year, with at least 141 hospitalizations reported so far.
Regional Impact and Affected States
While the cyclospora outbreak has national attention, the cases linked to the contaminated lettuce are primarily concentrated in the Midwest region. The CDC has identified at least 400 cases associated with this specific outbreak across four states: Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky. However, investigators noted that the produce may have been distributed to other locations beyond these four states as well.

The affected ingredient from their supplier is being indefinitely removed from their supply chain nationwide and will be replaced within 24 hours in select states. Taylor Farms did not respond to CNN’s request for comment on Thursday regarding the current situation. This proactive approach by the restaurant chain demonstrates their commitment to customer safety during the investigation.

Cyclosporiasis is not typically spread directly from person to person. Instead, people can become infected by consuming contaminated food or water. According to the CDC, previous outbreaks have been linked to fresh produce, making this type of contamination a recurring concern for food safety officials. People with cyclosporiasis may experience symptoms that include watery diarrhea, cramping, and bloating that can last for weeks.
Federal health officials said there are multiple investigations underway, some tied to the large outbreak in the Midwest, some involving single states, and some involving cases not yet tied to any cluster. Taylor Farms supplies grocery stores and restaurants across the country, although it remains unclear exactly how many of its products and which locations may be affected by this particular outbreak.
Historical data shows that Taylor Farms produce has also been linked with previous illness outbreaks, including E. coli cases tied to slivered onions in 2024 and cyclospora cases linked with lettuce in 2013.
