Ukraine Says Starshield Limits Remain Despite Trump’s Claim

Sandego.net – Trump claims Musk restored Starshield access, but Ukrainian military personnel and officials say restrictions on the satellite communications network are still affecting battlefield operations. The dispute centers on limits that appear to interrupt service for equipment moving at high speed, including some drones used against Russian attacks.

Speaking at the White House on Thursday, US President Donald Trump said the issue had been resolved and suggested Elon Musk had restored access. Trump did not clarify whether he personally contacted Musk.

“Whether I called or whether somebody else called doesn’t make any difference.”

Trump added:

“I guess the bottom line is he put it back.”

Ukrainian Officials See No Broad Change

Ukrainian officials said Friday that they had not seen evidence that the restrictions had been broadly removed. The continuing limits matter because satellite connectivity supports frontline communications, drone operations and other military activity as Ukraine defends itself against Russia’s invasion.

Serhiy Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said there was no clear sign that restrictions on Starlink had been lifted.

“At this time, we are not observing any lifting of restrictions on Starlink.”

Beskrestnov said there had been isolated occasions when service seemed to work above the expected limit. However, he said those cases could be linked to SpaceX algorithms or particular conditions rather than a formal change in policy.

“There are isolated cases where Starlink may operate slightly faster than the restrictions allow, but this is likely due to the SpaceX algorithm or specific usage conditions, rather than a lifting of the restrictions.”

A source in Ukraine’s Defense Ministry also said there was no confirmation that the limits had ended. Signal losses were still reported for military equipment traveling above 100 miles per hour, or 161 kilometers per hour.

High-Speed Drone Operations Remain Affected

An officer in the Ukrainian Armed Forces said speed restrictions continued to complicate coordination on the ground. Brief connection failures can be especially consequential during fast-moving military operations.

“There are definitely speed limits; nothing has changed yet, at least from what I can see here.”

“It makes coordination difficult; sometimes there are interruptions. The connection drops out for 10 to 15 seconds.”

The officer said Ukraine had lost more equipment than usual during the period of restrictions. Reconnaissance drones and platforms using Starlink-equipped systems were among those affected.

“We lost a lot of assets, much more than usual.”

A separate person familiar with the matter said any restored access did not appear sufficient to support interception of Russia’s jet-powered drones, which can travel too quickly for the remaining restrictions to have no effect.

Who Controls Starshield Restrictions?

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about who imposed the restrictions. Trump and senior administration officials denied ordering a reduction in Ukraine’s use of Starshield, but provided limited detail about how the limits were introduced.

Trump said earlier in the week that he was not involved. Musk rejected the suggestion that he had acted alone, saying the US government determines operational restrictions.

“Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS.”

Starshield is a military-grade version of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet system. Its reliability is important to Ukraine because connected drones, surveillance systems and frontline units depend on communications and data links during combat operations.

Starshield Restrictions: Frequently Asked Questions

Did Trump claims Musk restored Starshield access mean all limits were removed?

No. Trump said the service had been restored, but Ukrainian officials and military personnel said they had not seen confirmation that the wider restrictions were lifted.

What equipment is affected by the reported limits?

The reported restrictions have affected equipment moving at high speeds, including interceptor drones, reconnaissance drones and other systems that rely on satellite communications.

Why do short connection losses matter?

Even outages lasting 10 to 15 seconds can disrupt coordination, navigation and information sharing during fast-moving operations, particularly when drones or other equipment are traveling at high speed.

What is Starshield?

Starshield is the military-focused version of the Starlink satellite internet network. It can support communications, surveillance platforms and connected systems used by frontline forces.
