Two killed in mass shooting at Canada – What began as a vibrant celebration of Latin culture in Toronto quickly descended into terror on Saturday when at least two gunmen began exchanging shots among a crowd of approximately 13,000 festival attendees. The Salsa on St. Clair event, Canada’s most significant Latin street festival, became the scene of a deadly confrontation that left two people dead and six others wounded.
Toronto Police Service Deputy Chief Frank Barredo addressed reporters during a late Saturday news conference, confirming that six individuals had been struck by bullets during the incident. Of those wounded, four were transported to local hospitals suffering from serious injuries, while both deceased victims were identified as men. Authorities believe several suspects remain at large following the chaotic exchange of gunfire.
Witnesses Describe the Scene
As the shooting unfolded, festivalgoers scrambled for safety, running along sidewalks that had been cordoned off with yellow police tape. CTV footage captured the dramatic response as scores of black police SUVs, patrol vehicles, heavy-duty armored units, and ambulances converged on the midtown Toronto location.

Joanna Lavoie, a journalist covering the event for Canadian media outlet CP24, witnessed the transformation firsthand. She told CP24, which operates as a CNN affiliate, that the atmosphere shifted dramatically once gunshots echoed through the area. Lavoie observed a woman who appeared to have been hit, bearing significant wounds as she struggled on the ground.
Valerie Rodriguez, another attendee, recounted hearing screams and watching people flee. She explained that a group of individuals instructed her and others to lie down on the floor for protection as the danger unfolded around them.
Investigation Underway
Police investigators have established three separate crime scenes and recovered two firearms from the area. Deputy Chief Barredo emphasized that there is currently no ongoing threat to the public, though the investigation remains active. He described the incident as what appeared to be a targeted exchange between two individuals, though the bullets indiscriminately endangered the large crowd.
Authorities secured the scene approximately one hour after the shooting commenced. Despite the containment, police continued to urge residents and visitors to avoid the midtown district where the multiday festival has been held annually for 22 years according to event organizers.
Political Leaders Respond
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow issued a strong condemnation of the violence, calling it a reckless and despicable act of violence occurring at a crowded festival. In a statement posted on X, she pledged that authorities would work tirelessly to identify all suspects involved.
I will ensure Toronto Police have every resource they need to find those responsible, and they will keep working around the clock to get guns off our streets.
Both the mayor and police are requesting that any festival attendees who captured footage or possess relevant information come forward to assist with the investigation.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also expressed his reaction to the tragedy. In a public statement, he said he was horrified by the deadly shooting at the busy Toronto gathering. He extended his condolences, writing that his prayers are with the families grieving their loved ones as well as everyone who has been affected by this horrific event.
Context of Gun Violence in Canada
While deadly gun violence occurs less frequently in Canada than in the United States, it continues to impact communities across the nation. Less than three weeks prior to the Toronto incident, the country experienced another devastating mass shooting in Montreal. That attack involved a gunman opening fire in the city, followed by a subsequent shootout with police that resulted in two deaths and marked the first time a Montreal officer had been killed in the line of duty in twenty years.
The Toronto shooting occurred in a nation with considerably stronger gun legislation compared to its southern neighbor, where mass shootings remain relatively uncommon. Following Canada’s deadliest shooting in 2020 in Nova Scotia, where twenty-two people lost their lives, the government implemented significant reforms including bans on assault-style weapons.
