Bend community grieves as investigators seek answers in Silver Rail Elementary shooting

Sandego.net – Classes will not resume Monday for students in Bend, Oregon, as the community mourns the deaths of three children and a teacher following the shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School. Authorities are continuing to examine what led a 16-year-old former student to enter the campus Thursday and fire inside a mixed-age special needs classroom.

The attack killed teacher Megan Lambert, 25, and three students: 5-year-old Rhoam Summer and two children ages 8 and 11. The families of the two older students have asked police not to release their names. Two people were injured: Becky Drury, 54, an inclusion educational assistant from Bend, and 7-year-old Saylor Graham.

For a school district and city now facing an immense loss, the immediate focus has turned to supporting students, staff members and families while investigators work to establish a motive.

“We hold each of them and their families and their loved ones close in our hearts as we mourn together as one community,” Bend-La Pine Superintendent Steve Cook said in a video posted Sunday. “Our responsibilities to care for one another will continue well beyond these first days.”

How the shooting ended

Police identified the shooter as Griffin J. John II, a 16-year-old who had previously attended special needs classes at Silver Rail Elementary. Investigators have not determined whether he had been enrolled in the classroom targeted during the attack.

Authorities said the gunman forced his way into the school and opened fire. The violence ended after a teacher tackled him. A good Samaritan who had seen the suspect enter the building followed him and fatally shot him, police said.

The shooting was the 36th incident involving gunfire on K-12 school grounds in the United States this year, based on an analysis of several tracking databases, including the Gun Violence Archive. The episode has intensified grief in Bend while raising urgent questions about how the attack unfolded and what warning signs, if any, may emerge from the investigation.

Investigators review electronic devices and firearm history

Detectives interviewed the teenager’s parents Thursday. A senior law enforcement official familiar with the investigation said the parents cooperated with authorities. Investigators also searched the family home and removed computers and other electronic devices.

Local law enforcement and the FBI are expected to seek access to those devices as they look for communications, searches or other digital evidence that could help explain the planning or motive behind the shooting. Officials have not publicly identified a reason for the attack.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said Friday that the shooter used a Maverick 88 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun and had roughly 44 rounds of ammunition remaining. The firearm had been purchased by his mother, the law enforcement official said.

Oregon law bars people younger than 18 from legally buying a shotgun. State law can permit a minor to possess one when it has been transferred by a parent or guardian, or by someone acting with parental or guardian consent. Temporary possession is also allowed for activities including hunting, target practice and shooting sports.

Remembering the victims

The youngest victim, Rhoam Summer, was 5 years old. His father, Kelik Summer, shared his grief in a Facebook community group after the shooting.

“Today has been the worst day of my life. My son Rhoam was killed in a school shooting,” Summer wrote late Thursday. “We are broken and lost, but are surrounded by friends and family who are keeping us safe.”

Megan Lambert was a special education teacher whose family described working at Silver Rail Elementary as her “dream job.” She grew up in Bend, graduated from nearby Mountain View High School in 2019 and earned her degree from Boise State University in Idaho in 2023.

“Megan was compassionate and had a huge heart,” her family said. “She always fought for the underdog and those with special needs. She was an incredible sister, daughter, niece, and granddaughter. Her friends became her family. She was funny and opinionated, and she lit up the room.”

Her death has been felt especially deeply within a school setting built to serve children with varied learning and support needs. The classroom targeted in the attack included students of different ages receiving special needs services, making the losses and injuries especially difficult for families and educators across the district.

Tribal community offers condolences

John was an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, the tribe confirmed Sunday. Tribal CEO Kurtis Barker expressed sympathy for the people affected by the shooting and the wider Bend community.

“The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians is heartbroken by the tragic loss of life at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend,” Barker said. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones and hold in our thoughts those who were injured, the students and staff who experienced this unimaginable tragedy, and the entire Bend community as they grieve.”

With school canceled, families are being given time away from classrooms as the district responds to the trauma. The closure also underscores that the recovery will extend far beyond the first days after the shooting. Investigators still face the central unanswered question: why a former student returned to Silver Rail Elementary and carried out an attack that transformed a place of learning into the scene of devastating loss.
