UK man pleads guilty to drugging and raping his wife for 20 years

Man admits decades-long campaign of abuse against wife

Sandego.net – A man in his 60s has admitted in a Manchester court to drugging and raping his wife over a period lasting more than 20 years, bringing the number of offenses to which he has pleaded guilty to 60.

The defendant, who cannot be identified in order to protect his wife’s anonymity, entered further guilty pleas on Monday in northern England. His wife was present in the courtroom as the admissions were made.

The case involves allegations of prolonged abuse carried out without the woman’s knowledge. The offenses span rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, assault by penetration and administering a substance with intent.

Earlier denials followed by guilty pleas

The man had initially denied every allegation. During the summer, however, he pleaded guilty to five counts of rape, six counts of assault by penetration, three sexual assault offenses and one count involving the non-consensual sharing of intimate images of his wife.

His latest pleas raised the total number of admitted offenses to 60. The proceedings underline the scale and complexity of an investigation that has involved allegations against multiple people.

Twelve additional men are accused of sexual offenses involving the same woman. They are between 28 and 74 years old and come from different parts of the United Kingdom.

All 12 have denied the charges against them. Their trial is due to take place in Manchester, with prosecutors expected to begin presenting their case this week.

Support for the victim continues

Greater Manchester Police said its priority remains the woman at the center of the case as the criminal process continues. The force said she is receiving specialist assistance while investigators and prosecutors deal with the extensive allegations.

“Our focus remains on supporting the victim of this horrific campaign of abuse through what is a very complex investigation.”

Assistant Chief Constable Rick Jackson made the statement on Monday, adding that specialist support for the victim remains in place.

Cases involving alleged drugging and sexual abuse can present particularly difficult challenges for victims and investigators. The criminal proceedings must address a large number of alleged offenses while also protecting the identity and privacy of the survivor. In this case, the court’s restriction on naming the defendant is intended to prevent the identification of his wife.

The guilty pleas resolve the man’s responsibility for the offenses he has admitted, while the allegations involving the other defendants will be examined separately at trial. Each of those men remains entitled to have the accusations tested in court after entering not-guilty pleas.

For the woman involved, the court process represents only one part of a much longer experience. Police have emphasized the importance of continued specialist care as the investigation and the remaining prosecution move forward.
