The specimen was collected in Iran in 1968 and is held at Chicago’s Field Museum. At first, the unusual tail was not recognized as a normal feature of the species. Its appearance was so striking that observers could mistake it for a growth, parasite or anomaly.

“Everybody who looks at the tail thinks it has a tumor or some sort of growth or a parasite on it, and that it’s some sort of anomaly,” said Sara Ruane of the Field Museum.

Another specimen collected in 2003 helped establish that the tail structure was a defining characteristic rather than an individual abnormality. The viper was formally described as a new species in 2006.

The scans showed that the tail vertebrae are normal for a viper. Rather than being built on dramatically reshaped bones, the spider effect is produced largely by specialized scales and soft tissue at the tail’s end.

Why the finding matters

Scientists look inside the spider lure to better understand how visible adaptations can be hidden from the fossil record. An extinct animal with ordinary-looking tail bones may still have had a distinctive soft-tissue feature that would not survive fossilization.
