Stone Age Neighbors: New Evidence of Cultural Exchange in Turkish Cave

Sandego.net – Recent archaeological work conducted in a Turkish cave has uncovered compelling evidence that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens may have shared cultural practices during the Stone Age. While ancient DNA analysis has already confirmed that our species interbred with Neanderthals, the nature of their interactions remains a subject of ongoing investigation. According to new findings, these two groups did more than simply occupy the same territory; they appear to have adopted similar tool-making techniques and collected identical types of seashells.

İsmail Baykara, the lead author of the study, expressed his enthusiasm about the results in an email correspondence. He explained that the research, which appeared on Monday in the journal PNAS, points toward meaningful cultural connections between the two populations. “Our findings suggest that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens likely shared more than just the same landscape,” Baykara stated. He further elaborated that while direct proof of contact remains elusive, the striking consistency in hunting methods, technological approaches, and the movement of bead-like seashells supports the theory of sustained cultural exchange over extended periods.

A Cave with a Rich History

The Üçağızlı II cave, located in southern Turkey, has been recognized by archaeologists for quite some time. However, systematic excavation efforts only commenced in 2020, as noted by Baykara, who serves as a professor within the archaeology department at Gaziantep University in Turkey. The fossil record recovered from this site provides a clear timeline of occupation. Researchers identified four individual teeth alongside a partial jawbone containing two attached teeth. These remains indicate that Neanderthals lived in the cave between 77,000 and 59,000 years ago. Following their departure, Homo sapiens took up residence from approximately 59,000 years ago until 47,000 years ago. Scientists established these dates by analyzing and dating the sediment layers surrounding the fossils.

During their respective occupations, both species crafted flint tools in a distinctive Mousterian style. This classification derives its name from a rock shelter in France where such artifacts were initially discovered. Beyond tool production, the two groups hunted comparable prey, including wild goats, deer, and boars. One of the most unexpected discoveries involved the mollusk shell known as Columbella rustica. These shells are notably small and would not have served as a significant food source. They appeared in both the Neanderthal and Homo sapiens sediment layers. Some of the shells showed signs of perforation, which might indicate decorative use. The researchers categorized them as “manuports,” meaning objects that humans carried from their original locations. Although this particular shell has traditionally been associated exclusively with modern humans, the study’s authors argue that Neanderthals likely appreciated it as well.

“Neanderthals deliberately collected and transported this shell from the Mediterranean coast despite many other shell species being available, and modern humans at the site also collected Columbella rustica,” said study coauthor Naoki Morimoto, a researcher at Kyoto University in Japan.

Placing the Discovery in Context

The Üçağızlı II cave ranks among a select number of locations that preserve evidence from a crucial yet underexplored era in human history. Approximately 60,000 years ago, a massive migration of Homo sapiens departed from Africa, eventually populating every region of the world. A small number of pioneering groups had already left the continent considerably earlier. Many scholars believe that during this broader movement, modern humans crossed paths with Neanderthals in areas corresponding to present-day Turkey. Nevertheless, this idea primarily stems from population models derived from DNA analysis. Direct archaeological proof from this vital timeframe in the Levant—the region encompassing much of the Middle East and Turkey—remains limited and incomplete. The current study does not clarify whether the Homo sapiens who used the cave belonged to the major migratory wave or descended from those earlier pioneers.

Ludovic Slimak, an archaeologist affiliated with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and author of the book “The Last Neanderthal: How Humans Die,” praised the cave as “a very important discovery.” He emphasized that the findings challenge the notion that modern humans simply arrived and supplanted Neanderthals with a superior cultural framework. In an email message, Slimak highlighted a particularly significant aspect of the research. “To me, the most important point is not simply that Neanderthals and modern humans used similar tools or collected similar shells,” he remarked. “What is much more interesting here is that, within the chronological range of the Homo sapiens layer, modern humans appear to be involved in a deeply local, well-rooted Mousterian tradition.”

Slimak also drew attention to how the Turkish site contrasts with Grotte Mandrin, an archaeological location in southern France where both species once dwelled. He has directed excavations at that French site as well. At Grotte Mandrin, Homo sapiens occupied the rock shelter during roughly the same period their Neanderthal counterparts did, offering another window into how these ancient peoples coexisted and potentially influenced one another’s cultural development.
