“I will never forget looking down and watching my blood slowly stream down that white washing machine as I felt myself sinking to the floor,” she said, barely holding back tears. “We always have an escape plan now. This isn’t how people should live.”

During the proceedings, Boelter acknowledged dedicating several months to identifying and monitoring his intended targets before executing his plan. He traveled to multiple residences while wearing a police officer’s uniform, determined to eliminate those he had selected. Democratic State Representative Kristin Bahner was among two additional legislators whose homes Boelter visited that night. Fortunately, she and her family were away on vacation at the time. The narrow escape left her profoundly unsettled.

“I miss my mom. I miss my dad. I miss my best friends. And I miss believing in the goodness of humanity. I hope that one day these aches feel less sharp. And I know just like the love I feel for my parents, the pain will never go away,” she said through tears.

Colin Hortman spoke about the absence of his parents at his recent wedding ceremony. He described the devastation of not being able to dance with his mother or share in the celebration of his wedding cake, which she had planned to create. The trauma persists daily, with panic attacks and weeping remaining common occurrences.

“My days are filled with gray, and the blood that was spilled is the last thing I see before I go to sleep and the first thing I see when I wake,” he said. “There is no sentence that weighs 15 gunshots, a murdered dog and the rest of my life.”

Harold Haluptzok, Melissa’s father, emphasized the profound impact on both family and society. He repeatedly referred to his daughter as his “little girl,” expressing regret that the perpetrator never took time to explain his motivations.

“It is impossible to realize the damage that has been done not only to our family, but to our society,” he said. “I wish the perpetrator would have sat down and talked to us about why he did this.”
