The child, estimated to be between eleven and twelve years of age, was recovered from a local pond on Sunday, according to regional news outlets. Her relatives had filed a missing person report just one day prior, unaware of the grim fate awaiting their loved one.
Widespread coverage by Indian media outlets has confirmed that the girl suffered sexual assault before her death, a conclusion drawn from official statements. The harrowing images of her body being retrieved circulated extensively across social media platforms, generating intense emotional responses from citizens across the country and beyond.
Mob Violence and Police Response
In the wake of this devastating news, residents of Baruipur took to the streets in a display of collective grief and anger. Shops were damaged, and railway infrastructure suffered significant destruction as crowds moved through the city. A man who was initially believed to be responsible for the crime was beaten to death by an enraged mob, according to local authorities.

According to their account, the suspect managed to seize a service weapon from an officer during the reconstruction of the crime scene. He fired a single shot before attempting to escape, prompting a shootout that left him critically wounded. He was later pronounced dead.
Despite these efforts, CNN attempted to contact both the Baruipur police and the Inspector General of the Presidency range, a senior West Bengal police official overseeing the district. Neither source provided a response at the time of publication.
