Judo Returns to Upper Austria as Grand Prix Action Begins in Linz
The World Judo Tour made its way back to Upper Austria’s scenic landscapes for the latest Grand Prix event, held at the Tips Arena in Linz. Spectators witnessed thrilling Judo action as the competition unfolded on the opening day of the tournament.
Opening Ceremony Highlights
The event kicked off with the official ceremony led by IJF Head Sport Director Mr Vladimir Barta, Upper Austria Governor Mr Thomas Stelzer, and Austrian Judo Federation President Dr Martin Poiger. Their presence marked the start of a day filled with high-level competition and ceremonial recognition.
-48 kg Final: A Dominant Performance
Japan’s Mitsuki KONDO faced Spain’s Eva PEREZ SOLER in the first final of the day. Her decisive move, a clinical Tai-otoshi followed by a hold down, secured the gold medal. This victory marked KONDO’s second Grand Prix title in Upper Austria, adding to her growing accolades.
-60 kg: A Repeat of Past Glory
Romain VALADIER PICARD of France, who claimed gold in this category in 2023, aimed for another triumph. A well-timed seoi-otoshi throw sent him to the top of the podium once again. The medal was presented by IJF Education & Coaching Director Mr Mohammed MERIDJA.
-52 kg: Early Advantage Leads to Victory
Japan’s Iroha OI faced Hungary’s Roza GYERTYAS in the -52 kg bracket. An early yuko score was enough to clinch the gold. The award ceremony was presided over by President of the Austrian Olympic Committee Mr Horst NUSSBAUMER.
-66 kg: Golden Score Decides the Match
The -66 kg final saw Azerbijan’s Ruslan PASHAYEV challenge Brazil’s Ronald LIMA. After both competitors scored a yuko, the outcome hinged on a golden score. PASHAYEV’s timely ashi waza move sealed his win, with the medals handed over by IJF Head Sport Director Mr Vladimir BARTA.
-57 kg: Shime-Waza Secures First Title
An all-Japan showdown in the -57 kg division concluded with Ayami TAKANO’s well-executed shime-waza technique earning her the first Grand Prix gold of her career. The award was given by IJF Head Referee Director Mr Armen BAGDASAROV.
