Watch: School Principal Subdues Active Shooter in Oklahoma
CCTV footage from Pauls Valley High School in Oklahoma captures the dramatic moment a principal intervenes against an active shooter. Victor Hawkins, the assailant, entered the school on 7 April and opened fire before being tackled by Kirk Moore, the principal. The incident escalated when a colleague arrived and disarmed the gunman, though Moore suffered a leg wound during the confrontation. He has since recovered and been discharged from the hospital.
Hawkins was apprehended on-site and faces multiple charges, including two counts of pointing a firearm, one of attempted murder, and two of unlawful weapon possession. The event has sparked discussions about school safety and the bravery of educators in high-stress situations.
Artemis II Crew Sets New Space Record
During their nine-day journey, the four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft broke a longstanding distance record. Their path carried them farther from Earth than any human crew in history, surpassing the Apollo 13 feat of 248,655 miles (400,171km). Contact was reestablished with Earth, and astronaut Christina Koch shared her thoughts:
“It is so great to hear from Earth again.”
The mission, now in its third day, involves navigating the far side of the Moon. While the crew will not land during this trip, NASA aims to achieve a lunar touchdown by 2028. Rebecca Morelle, the BBC’s Science Editor, observed the launch from just three miles away, highlighting the significance of the event as the most powerful rocket ever built lifted off from Florida.
Canadian Prime Minister Joins Artemis II Crew
The Canadian prime minister participated in a joint event with the Finnish president during his inaugural formal bilateral visit. This marked a notable moment for Jeremy Hansen, who became the first Canadian astronaut to venture into deep space as part of the Artemis II mission. The crew also shared updates via video link, offering glimpses into their experiences and sending messages to loved ones.
Meanwhile, a commercial flight provided passengers with a rare aerial view of the Moon mission’s launch. Despite delays and technical challenges, the first crewed lunar mission in half a century successfully launched and entered Earth’s orbit, marking a milestone in space exploration.
