Sandego.net – A Greek court has begun proceedings against a 26-year-old Afghan national charged with the murder of a Scottish humanitarian worker, whose remains were discovered inside a suitcase at an abandoned building in the Greek capital. The suspect, whose identity remains protected under Greek privacy legislation, faces multiple charges including intentional homicide, robbery, and firearms violations following his arrest on Sunday and formal remand on Thursday.

Elisabeth Ross, aged 38, was reported missing after her whereabouts became unknown in mid-July. Her body was subsequently located on July 18 within an unfinished construction project in Athens, concealed inside a large suitcase that had been positioned near the site. Greek police confirmed that surveillance camera footage captured a man transporting the suitcase away from the area shortly before its discovery by a local resident.

Investigation Developments and Suspect Background

George Kalliakmanis, who leads the Union of Police Officers of Southeast Attica, provided details about the investigation’s progress. He explained that police identified the suspect through CCTV recordings showing a man near the construction site pushing a large suitcase. This same suitcase was later recovered by another individual in the vicinity.

The accused has a background in boxing and achieved recognition in Greek national competitions, according to CNN Greece. He relocated from Afghanistan at age 15 and arrived in Greece in 2016. In 2023, he married a United States citizen, and the couple welcomed one child. That same year, they established a non-governmental organization dedicated to supporting refugees throughout Greece.

Authorities are currently examining whether the suspect knew Ross through their shared work with refugee communities. Police Scotland has confirmed it is assisting with the investigation and providing support to Ross’s family in Scotland.

Conflicting Accounts and Emerging Evidence

During his initial police testimony, the suspect denied killing Ross. He claimed to have discovered her body already deceased in a bathroom and, acting on panic, decided to move her remains. However, Kalliakmanis noted that several questions persist regarding how the suspect gained access to Ross’s apartment and whether she opened the door for him or if he possessed a key.

“In his first testimony he (the suspect) denies killing the woman. He said he found her dead in the bathroom. And then panicked and decided to remove the body,” Kalliakmanis stated.

Additional evidence has emerged regarding financial transactions following Ross’s disappearance. The suspect has acknowledged using Ross’s bank card to withdraw approximately 10,000 euros, equivalent to roughly 11,500 US dollars. Investigators also believe that someone continued to operate Ross’s mobile phone after her death, sending messages that appeared to originate from her. These communications ceased once her body was discovered.

Wife’s Testimony and Medical Findings

Following the discovery of Ross’s remains, the suspect’s wife approached police with information from a location-sharing application used by the couple. The app indicated that her husband was present in the flat where Ross died during the evening of July 15 and into the early morning hours of July 16. Despite this revelation, the wife did not immediately question her husband about his presence there.

Kalliakmanis confirmed that investigators have found no evidence suggesting the suspect’s wife participated in Ross’s death. A preliminary coroner’s examination has not yet established a definitive cause of death, though asphyxiation remains a possibility that cannot be excluded.

The US State Department has acknowledged the situation, with a spokesperson noting that the department works to provide appropriate consular assistance when American citizens encounter difficulties abroad. While the nationality of the suspect’s wife was not formally confirmed, the department’s statement suggests she holds American citizenship.

The suspect appeared briefly in court on Wednesday before returning for a more substantial hearing on Thursday. The case continues to develop as Greek authorities gather additional evidence and prepare for further proceedings.
