Physicians typically assess testosterone levels alongside complementary tests, including estradiol and sex hormone-binding globulin, on at least two separate occasions. This methodology helps eliminate variables that might artificially elevate or depress results.

Testosterone originates in the testicles, which produce this essential hormone when triggered by signals from the brain. It serves as the primary driver of male growth and developmental processes. These concentrations fluctuate continuously throughout the day, peaking during morning hours and declining by afternoon. Multiple factors influence production, including sleep quality, body weight, physical activity, and psychological stress. Additionally, testosterone naturally decreases approximately one percent annually once men reach their thirties or forties.

Most laboratories define the normal range as spanning between three hundred and one thousand nanograms per deciliter. This broad spectrum means the threshold for “low” varies depending on which clinical guidelines your physician follows and which laboratory conducted your analysis.

Treatment Considerations

When a man genuinely exhibits low testosterone, therapeutic intervention typically involves administering testosterone through gels, patches, injections, or occasionally implanted pellets. Conversely, patients with excessively high levels—often resulting from supplements or oversized doses—simply need to reduce their intake and allow their bodies to recalibrate naturally.
