The timing of her release proved fortunate given her medical condition, with Genser describing the situation as something approaching a miracle considering she was leaving during what he termed a period of armed conflict.

The circumstances surrounding her detention began when Karari traveled to Iran for a family visit. This initial encounter marked the beginning of what would become an extended period of interrogation.
Legal Complications and Diplomatic Efforts
Throughout her time in Iran, Karari faced repeated questioning sessions and was subjected to what Genser described as a restrictive travel prohibition. Her situation drew attention due to her involvement with the Children of Mehr Foundation, a charitable organization providing assistance to underprivileged Iranian youth. The foundation operated with private funding and maintained proper authorization through an Office of Foreign Assets Control license.
By April, Karari’s travel restrictions lapsed and she recovered her documents. However, her attempt to depart was unsuccessful. Genser explained that negotiations between Washington and Tehran regarding a memorandum of understanding created an opportunity to advance her case. Representatives contacted White House officials and diplomatic negotiators, emphasizing the urgency of Karari’s situation.
