Trump endorses ex-UK political aide Steve Hilton for California governor
Donald Trump Backs Former UK Adviser Steve Hilton in California Governor Race
Former British Prime Minister David Cameron’s key advisor, Steve Hilton, has received a surprising endorsement from US President Donald Trump for the California governor race. This move has introduced a new dynamic to a contest already known for its unpredictability, especially in a state dominated by Democratic voters.
Trump highlighted his support for Hilton in a post on Truth Social, claiming the Republican candidate would “be a great governor.” The president criticized California’s current Democratic leadership, stating that “Democrats have done an absolutely horrendous job” and that “people are fleeing” the state. Hilton, who now resides in California, is among ten contenders vying for the June 2 primary.
The primary system in California allows the top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, to advance to the general election. This setup has historically favored Democrats, as Republicans have not secured a statewide win in the state for over two decades. However, the fractured Democratic field has created an opportunity for Republicans to challenge the status quo.
“Deeply honored” to accept the Republican president’s endorsement, Hilton expressed on X. His campaign focuses on reducing taxes, trimming the state budget, and lowering costs for families through policy reforms.
While Trump’s backing may boost Hilton’s visibility, it could also complicate his path to victory. If he faces a Democrat in November, the liberal-leaning state’s voters might remain skeptical. Hilton previously served as Cameron’s senior aide from 2010 to 2012 but later grew critical of the Conservative leader’s immigration stance, leading to his shift toward Fox News and conservative media.
A recent poll by the University of California, Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies raised eyebrows, showing Hilton and Republican rival Chad Bianco outpacing Democratic hopefuls. This prompted Democratic officials to urge some candidates to withdraw, as the race for governor gained momentum. The poll indicated that Congressman Eric Swalwell, former congresswoman Katie Porter, and billionaire climate advocate Tom Steyer were the most supported among eight Democratic contenders.
