Man Accused of Shooting Two National Guard Members Hospitalized

The Washington, DC resident was charged with fatally shooting one National Guard member and wounding another during an ambush in the nation’s capital. Prosecutors confirmed that the emergency hospital admission occurred at midnight, following concerns raised by the US Marshal Service approximately two weeks earlier about Lakanwal’s deteriorating health condition.
Self-Inflicted Health Crisis
DC federal Judge Amit Mehta addressed the situation during an emergency court session on Thursday, noting that the defendant’s medical condition stems primarily from his own choices.
Mr. Lakanwal’s health circumstances, is in some sense self-inflicted.
The judge explained that Lakanwal has consistently refused food and occasionally declined water as well. This persistent refusal to consume adequate nutrition has led to a significant decline in his physical condition, ultimately prompting authorities to move him from jail to George Washington University Hospital for intensive medical monitoring and care.

During the same emergency hearing, Judge Mehta granted prosecutors access to Lakanwal’s medical records from the previous twenty-four hour period. These previously sealed documents are expected to help determine the next steps in the case. Lakanwal entered a not guilty plea to all nine charges filed against him in February, which include first-degree murder among other serious offenses. The defendant originally traveled from Washington state to Washington, DC in late November before allegedly ambushing the two National Guard officers during their routine patrol in the city.

The tragic shooting incident resulted in the death of Sarah Beckstrom, one of the National Guard members who suffered a gunshot wound to the back of her head. Lakanwal brings substantial international experience to this case, having worked with the Central Intelligence Agency for more than ten years during his time in Afghanistan before the United States military concluded its operations in the country.
