At his celebration gathering on June 30, he characterized his campaign journey as “nothing shy of beyond incredible,” noting that he had confronted criticism from both Democratic and Republican figures regarding his personal history.
“This is a battle of good and evil. This isn’t so much parties anymore,” Marx told the assembled crowd. “This is about Coloradans who care and want common sense, less government, stop the spending, get crime under control, let law enforcement do their job, make our state affordable, get people out of the addiction cycle. All these things that matter, that’s what we’ve talked about from the beginning. Our opponents have simply attacked me the entire time.”
Unconventional Background and Claims
Operating as a “high-risk humanitarian,” he directs an organization dedicated to combating human trafficking while also practicing what he calls “Cajun Karate.” His narrative encompasses a wide spectrum of experiences, from saving victims of abuse to allegedly commanding an aerial bombardment against ISIS forces. During a May conversation with local broadcaster 9News, Marx maintained the veracity of his statements while frequently withholding specific details, particularly concerning the circumstances of his purported airstrike command.
When questioned whether the individual he claimed to have killed during childhood remained his only victim, he hesitated before answering: “Well, I would say, as a child, yes.” He continued, “But I’ve been in other situations where, you know, possibly, people or persons died as a result of me defending myself and other countries.” When pressed further about potential adult-era fatalities, he responded with a question of his own: “Does it matter?”
Controversial Campaign Assertions
Additional scrutiny emerged regarding a statement on his official campaign website claiming that “his teams have served over 45,000 women and children, many rescued from captivity and given a second chance at life.” This assertion was subsequently withdrawn, with Marx suggesting the figure might have originated from an independent contractor during the website’s initial development. When asked to clarify the actual number of individuals he has helped, he indicated that providing specifics was unnecessary due to “security reasons,” adding with characteristic humor: “I would say it’s more than one and less than a bunch.”
He has also publicly discussed performing hundreds of prayers intended to “set people free” from what he describes as “demonic oppression,” distinguishing this practice from traditional exorcisms. He informed 9News that he provides this service both in person and via telephone without charging fees. When asked whether he would maintain this practice if elected, Marx affirmed: “I would never stop praying for people.”
Opposition Challenges
During the sole debate Marx attended last month, he encountered significant criticism from his Republican competitors. Scott Bottoms, an evangelical pastor elected to the state legislature in 2022, reinforced his earlier characterization of Marx as a con artist. “I also said he was corrupt and I also said he lies and he lied to me personally quite a few times, and so I stand by that,” Bottoms declared. “I can’t put somebody like that anymore than I can put a Democrat into the governor’s seat.” Bottoms centered his campaign on trust and experience, contrasting his own legislative record with what he described as Marx’s inconsistent claims.
