NYPD officer dies in medical episode while deployed to Kuwait in Iran war
NYPD Officer Dies in Medical Incident During Deployment to Kuwait in Iran Conflict
During a recent operation in Kuwait, an NYPD officer passed away due to a medical emergency, officials from the city and state confirmed. The incident occurred at Camp Buehring, where Sorffly Davius was stationed as part of the U.S. military’s involvement in the joint effort against Iran. New York Governor Kathy Hochul shared the news in a statement, honoring Davius as a “true Citizen Soldier” and a devoted family man.
A Devoted Serviceman’s Legacy
Davius, who had served in the Army National Guard’s 42nd Infantry Division, attained the rank of major before his time with the NYPD. He joined the department in 2014, initially assigned to the 79th Precinct. The police force expressed its condolences, stating, “Today, and always, we keep his family in our thoughts and prayers.” They also emphasized, “May we never forget Officer Davius’ sacrifice and may his memory be a blessing.”
“His life is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by our National Guard members, who balance their roles as citizens, first responders, and soldiers,” Hochul added.
Before his deployment overseas, Davius was recognized for his service on Joint Task Force Empire Shield, a unit responsible for safeguarding New York’s key locations from security threats. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch echoed this sentiment in a statement Saturday, noting, “His career was defined by service — to his country and to New York City.”
NBC News has sought comments from the National Guard and U.S. Central Command regarding the incident. The ongoing military operation against Iran has led to the loss of seven U.S. service members, with six fatalities reported in Kuwait. A seventh American soldier died Saturday evening, resulting from injuries sustained during a March 1 attack on U.S. forces in Saudi Arabia, according to U.S. Central Command.
