Star Trek icon Brent Spiner makes a rare sighting at 77, see him now
A few days ago, Brent Spiner, the iconic Star Trek actor, was spotted in the Hollywood Hills, where he appeared lively and energetic despite his age of 77. His presence, though brief, captured the attention of fans and media alike.
Star Trek Legacy
Spiner’s breakthrough in the sci-fi universe came with his role as Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation. As a sentient android crew member of the starship USS Enterprise-D, the character became a fan favorite, often compared to Leonard Nimoy’s Dr. Spock from the original 1960s series. The show, led by Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, featured Spiner alongside Whoopi Goldberg and LeVar Burton in its ensemble cast.
The android’s sharp intellect and enigmatic demeanor allowed him to serve as a pivotal character, much like the original series’ Spock. Spiner’s portrayal of Data continued to resonate, with the role reprised in various Star Trek films and recent TV series, including Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Career Beginnings
Before his galactic fame, Spiner honed his craft on the New York stage in the 1970s. By the 1980s, he joined the original cast of the acclaimed musical Sunday in the Park with George, which premiered on Broadway in 1984. This marked the beginning of his transition to television, as he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a screen career.
His early television work included guest spots on shows like Night Court and Cheers, before landing the role of Data in 1987. The character became a cornerstone of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which aired for seven seasons until 1994. Spiner also appeared in four Star Trek film spin-offs, from Generations to Nemesis, spanning the 1990s through the early 2000s.
Podcast Venture
A month ago, Spiner revealed plans for a new project with his longtime co-star Jonathan Frakes. The duo, who played Riker and Data respectively, announced the launch of a celebrity interview podcast titled Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny. In their introductory YouTube video, they emphasized,
“This is not a Star Trek podcast.”
Despite their initial reluctance, they acknowledged,
“they have surrendered to fate and resigned themselves to the fact that the show that brought them to stardom will be a subject of their podcast.”
Spiner’s career has extended beyond Star Trek, with notable film roles in Independence Day, Dude, Where’s My Car?, and The Aviator. He has also returned to stage, appearing in Broadway revivals of 1776 and Man of La Mancha. Fans who missed his latest work can revisit his voice in the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, which aired in 2024.
