Woman Killed by St. Patrick’s Day Parade Float in Louisville
A fatal accident occurred during a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Louisville, Kentucky, when a woman was struck and killed by a float. According to Louisville Metro Police, the incident took place around 4 p.m. EDT on Saturday near the intersection of Bardstown Road and Grinstead Drive. The victim, thought to be in her 50s, was walking beside the parade when her foot became entangled with the float, pulling her into the path of the moving vehicle.
Authorities reported that the float halted immediately after the collision, allowing first responders to transport the woman to University Hospital. Despite efforts to save her, the individual succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. The Louisville Metro Police Department’s traffic unit is currently investigating the incident.
“I am so sorry to hear about the tragic accident that took a woman’s life at today’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade,” said Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg. “Please join Rachel and me in keeping her family and friends in your prayers. May her memory be a blessing.”
The Hibernian Cultural and Charitable Association of Louisville, which organized the event, released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident. The group noted that its members are offering their heartfelt condolences to the family and those affected. They also urged the public to maintain empathy for the bereaved and respect the privacy of the deceased’s family.
Representatives from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office did not respond to NBC News’ inquiry on Monday. The event, which was meant to celebrate Irish culture, now carries a somber tone as the community processes the loss.
