Trump seeks $152m to reopen infamous Alcatraz prison

President Donald Trump has proposed a $152 million investment to transform the historic Alcatraz prison into a modern secure facility, as part of his 2027 fiscal year budget. Situated near San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, the island—known as The Rock—was once a symbol of America’s toughest incarceration, but now functions as a popular tourist destination. The budget aims to cover initial operational costs for the project, which would involve rebuilding the site into a high-tech prison.

Historical significance and current status

Alcatraz, originally a naval fortress, transitioned into a military prison before becoming a federal penitentiary in the 1930s. It was closed in 1963 and has since been managed by the National Park Service. Today, it generates $60 million annually through tourism. Critics argue that repurposing the site would mean losing its status as a cultural icon.

“Rebuilding Alcatraz into a modern prison is a stupid notion that would be nothing more than a waste of taxpayer dollars and an insult to the intelligence of the American people,” said Nancy Pelosi, former US House speaker. She called the plan “absurd on its face” and urged its rejection.

Opposition from California lawmakers highlights concerns over the project’s feasibility and cost. They question whether the island’s logistical challenges—such as limited water and sewage infrastructure, and reliance on boat deliveries for supplies—make it viable as a functioning prison. The Bureau of Prisons reported that operating Alcatraz was three times more expensive than other federal facilities at its closure.

Proposed revival and cultural impact

Trump announced the plan on Truth Social, stating that the Bureau of Prisons, alongside the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, would “reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt Alcatraz.” The goal is to house the country’s most dangerous criminals. The initiative is part of a $1.7 billion funding package for the Bureau of Prisons.

Alcatraz has featured in numerous films, including 1962’s *Birdman of Alcatraz* with Burt Lancaster, 1979’s *Escape from Alcatraz* starring Clint Eastwood, and 1996’s *The Rock*, which included Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage. Notable inmates throughout its history include gangsters like Al Capone, Mickey Cohen, and George “Machine Gun” Kelly.
