French Minister Under Fire for Playboy Magazine Cover

Marlene Schiappa, a French government minister, has sparked controversy within her own party after gracing the cover of Playboy magazine. The minister, who has held her position since 2017, was featured in a 12-page interview focusing on women’s and LGBT rights. The photograph, showcasing her in a white dress, has drawn sharp criticism from political allies, including Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne.

Schiappa, known for her advocacy of gender equality, became France’s first-ever Gender Equality Minister in 2017. She played a pivotal role in implementing a sexual harassment law that permits immediate fines for men who catcall, harass, or follow women in public spaces. Despite these efforts, her latest appearance has become a focal point of debate.

“We are in the middle of a social crisis, there is the issue of policing, there are people between life and death, and I have the impression of being behind a smoke screen,” said Sandrine Rousseau, a Green Party politician and women’s rights advocate, during an interview with BFMTV.

France is currently experiencing a political and social upheaval linked to President Emmanuel Macron’s push for pension reforms. Critics argue that the reforms have ignited widespread public discontent. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a prominent French politician who finished third in the 2022 presidential race, took aim at both Schiappa’s Playboy cover and Macron’s recent appearance in a children’s magazine.

“In a country where the President expresses himself in Pif and his minister in Playboy, the problem would be the opposition. France is going off the rails,” Mélenchon tweeted.

Schiappa defended her decision in a social media post, stating: “Defending the right of women to have control of their bodies is a constant endeavor. In France, women are free.” Her stance contrasts with Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, who praised her during an interview with CNews, calling her a “woman of character” and highlighting her distinct political style.
