Football Rally in Peru Leaves One Fan Dead, Dozens Injured

During a pre-match gathering at Alejandro Villanueva Stadium in Lima, Peru, a tragic incident resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to over 40 spectators. The Peruvian Health Minister, Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero, confirmed the fatality at a hospital in the capital, stating that 47 people were treated for wounds, with three in critical condition.

Reports initially claimed parts of the stadium’s wall and structure had collapsed, but this was later contested. Fire Chief Marcos Pajuelo clarified that the southern stands remained intact, asserting, “There are no collapsed walls or sections fallen into the pit,” according to his remarks to reporters.

“According to preliminary information, the incident is not related to the collapse of walls or structural facilities of the sports complex,” stated Alianza Lima, the home team, in a statement posted on X.

The football league confirmed that Saturday night’s match against local rivals Universitario de Deportes will proceed as scheduled. Earlier, the interior ministry had reported that 40 firefighters attended an emergency involving individuals trapped within a structure at the stadium.

Officials are now examining the incident’s origins, with the Peruvian Professional Football League emphasizing its dedication to ensuring the safety of all event participants.
