Britney Spears arrested on suspicion of DUI in Southern California

Britney Spears Arrested on DUI Charges in Southern California

On Wednesday night, Britney Spears was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities reported. The 44-year-old singer was detained around 9:30 p.m. local time and later released on Thursday, per records from Ventura County jail. Her vehicle was towed following the incident.

Details of the Incident

A CHP representative confirmed that the arrest occurred in Ventura County after a report was filed at approximately 8:48 p.m. about a black BMW 430i traveling erratically and at high speed on the southbound 101 freeway. The car was stopped near Westlake Boulevard, where Spears exhibited signs of impairment. She underwent field sobriety tests before being charged with a single count of driving under the influence of both drugs and alcohol.

“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” said a spokesperson for Spears. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.”

Spears was alone in the BMW at the time, according to the CHP. Pending chemical tests and ongoing investigation are expected to provide further clarity on the case. Her representatives also noted that her sons will spend time with her, emphasizing efforts to support her well-being.

Social Media and Mental Health Concerns

Recent videos shared on Spears’ Instagram account have sparked public attention, with most depicting her dancing alone in her Thousand Oaks, California, home. The continuous stream of content, including detailed diary entries, has drawn both mockery and concern over her mental health. As of Thursday morning, her Instagram profile appeared to be temporarily removed.

Her arrest follows a pattern of high-profile moments, including an incident where she was photographed hitting a car with an umbrella and a newly shaven head. Despite these events, Spears had not been previously arrested until now.

Conservatorship and Career Highlights

Spears’ arrest comes five years after a judge ended her controversial conservatorship, which had given her father control over her finances, career, and personal life for 13 years. The conservatorship was established following a series of mental health challenges in the early 2000s. In her 2023 memoir, The Woman In Me, Spears detailed how her life was managed by others during that period.

Throughout her career, Spears has been a global pop icon, known for hits like …Baby One More Time, Oops!… I Did It Again!, Womanizer, and I’m a Slave 4 U. She earned her first Grammy in 2004 for Best Dance Recording with Toxic and was nominated for seven additional awards. Recently, she sold her music catalog to Primary Wave for roughly $200 million.

TMZ was the first to report Spears’ arrest. Matt Lavietes, a reporter for NBC News, contributed to the coverage of this story.
