BBC sacked Scott Mills after learning alleged victim in police investigation was under 16
Scott Mills, a BBC presenter, was dismissed following the revelation that the individual accused in the police inquiry was under the age of 16. BBC News understands that management only became aware of this detail in recent weeks, leading to the decision to terminate his contracts. The BBC had knowledge of the sexual offences investigation in 2017, though it is unclear whether senior leaders at the time knew the victim’s age.
The Met Police confirmed the investigation centered on serious sexual offences allegedly committed between 1997 and 2000, when Mills was in his mid-20s. The case was closed in 2019 after prosecutors concluded there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him. Mills, 53, released a statement on Wednesday, stating he had “fully cooperated and responded” to the inquiry during its 2018 phase.
Recent sacking and new information
In a statement, the BBC explained that new data emerged recently, prompting management to act decisively on Friday 27 March. The spokesperson noted: “We obtained fresh information relating to Scott and spoke directly with him, resulting in the termination of his contracts.” The BBC also mentioned that Tony Hall, the director general during the investigation, was unaware of the allegations at the time.
“Since the investigation related to an allegation that dates back nearly 30 years and the police investigation was closed 7 years ago, I hope that the public and the media will understand and respect my wish not to make any further public comment on this matter,” Mills said.
Mills added: “I wish to thank from the bottom of my heart all those who have reached out to me with kindness, my former colleagues, and my beloved listeners, who I greatly miss.” His statement did not address the specifics of the allegations, nor did it clarify the reasons for his sacking.
Public reaction and coverage changes
The announcement of Mills’ dismissal stunned listeners, prompting calls for the BBC to explain its decision. His final Radio 2 breakfast show appearance was on Tuesday 24 March, where he signed off with: “Back tomorrow.” Gary Davies took over the next day, stating he was “in for Scott Mills” and has been hosting the show since. Davies and overnight presenter OJ Borg will continue covering the program while speculation grows about his replacement.
