Ban for teacher who told pupils about drunken night
Ban for Teacher Who Shared Personal Details with Students
A head teacher at Westfield Academy in Yeovil, Somerset, has been indefinitely barred from working after sharing intimate aspects of her private life with pupils. Natasha Blackmore, 36, admitted to breaching professional standards by discussing relationships, social habits, and her personal experiences during school hours. The Teaching Regulation Agency’s Professional Conduct Panel reviewed the case and determined her actions fell short of expected behavior.
Blackmore revealed “substantial personal information” about her lifestyle, including nights out involving alcohol and vaping. She also shared texts in which she had criticized another individual, and described instances of socializing with students during breaks and lunchtimes. The report noted that up to five pupils frequently visited her classroom during unstructured periods, forming a close bond that blurred professional boundaries.
“It had evolved into a sort of unusual connection where we shared everything,” said one student, referring to the informal interactions. Another pupil mentioned that four classmates would regularly gather in her room during school hours, engaging in conversations about daily routines, personal issues, and even arguments.
Blackmore explained that the students’ support was crucial after her dog passed away, stating, “Without their help, I don’t believe I would have returned to work with the same confidence.” However, the panel found that joining a pupil’s Instagram group chat and organizing a meeting with students during school holidays constituted misconduct. The incident was deemed to have compromised her professional role.
A parent defended Blackmore, claiming she had always been a reliable educator. “I never felt anything was being hidden,” the parent said. Despite this, the panel concluded that her conduct “significantly deviated from the standards expected of a teacher.” The ban can be reconsidered after two years, pending a review of her circumstances.
