Monkey ‘tied with rope around neck’ in live ‘execution’ performance

A video capturing monkeys allegedly mistreated during a live performance at a tourist site has ignited public anger in China.

The incident occurred at Longquan Ancient Town Drama Fantasy City, located in Luquan District, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province. Clips revealed a macaque restrained with a metal muzzle and dressed in a yellow vest, forced to kneel by a man addressing an audience filled with children.

He then draped a black cloth over the monkey’s head and secured its arms to a plastic pipe. With a prop gun in hand, he appeared to mimic shooting the animal, which subsequently collapsed to the ground and remained motionless.

Staff at Longquan Ancient Town informed media that the monkey act was managed by an external performance team, with the attraction merely providing the venue. They emphasized no direct involvement in the show’s operations.

Following numerous complaints, the scenic area announced it had ended its contract with the performance partner and suspended the act. Customer service representatives confirmed the show was removed from the schedule.

Officials from the Luquan District Culture, Radio, Television, Sports and Tourism Bureau acknowledged the public backlash and stated an investigation had been initiated. They noted the performers were part of an outside group, not employees of the site.

In 2023, a shocking monkey torture ring was exposed, where online viewers paid to watch videos of primates being mistreated. The BBC uncovered this global network, spanning from the US to Indonesia, after a year-long probe.

The World Service, in collaboration with animal rights advocates, found hundreds of people in the US, UK, and other regions funding Indonesian individuals to harm baby long-tailed macaques on camera. Initially posted on YouTube, the videos shifted to Telegram as demands for more extreme abuse grew.

Authorities were alerted, leading to several arrests linked to the operation. The ongoing investigation continues to shed light on the extent of the cruelty.
