The weirdest heists in history after thieves’ brazen KitKat lorry raid
While films like Ocean’s Eleven, The Italian Job, or Wallace and Gromit: The Wrong Trousers often depict high-stakes robberies, history shows that some of the most unusual crimes are far less glamorous. From stolen chocolate bars to vanishing cheese wheels, these incidents highlight how even the most mundane items can become targets of bizarre thefts.
A Chocolate Heist That Went Viral
Recent headlines revealed a surprising twist in a heist involving 413,793 KitKat chocolate bars. Thieves intercepted a lorry transporting 12 tons of the popular chocolate-covered wafer snack between Nestlé’s factory in Perugia, Italy, and its Polish destination. The theft, which occurred this week, sparked a light-hearted response from KitKat, who shared a statement to raise awareness about this emerging trend in criminal activity.
“We’ve chosen to go public with our own experience in the hope it raises awareness of an increasingly common criminal trend,” the brand noted.
The event underscores how even high-value items like gold and diamonds aren’t the only targets. In 2023, a similar incident saw 200,000 Cadbury Creme Eggs disappear from a trailer in Telford, Shropshire. The theft was linked to a 32-year-old suspect from near Leeds, who had stolen a tractor the previous October to facilitate the crime.
The Parma Cheese Mystery
Fast forward to 2016, when a theft in Marshfield, Wisconsin, stunned local authorities. Parmesan cheese worth $90,000 was reported missing from a distributor. Two weeks later, police uncovered the stolen goods in a nearby warehouse, thanks to a tip-off. However, another trailer containing $70,000 worth of cheese was also stolen during this period.
Further back in time, a bizarre string of vehicle cargo robberies gripped Germany in the late 2010s. In August 2017, a semi-trailer filled with 20 tons of Nutella and Kinder Surprise eggs vanished from Neustadt. The theft included thousands of plastic toys, adding an extra layer of oddity to the crime.
That same weekend, another semi-trailer with 30 tons of fruit juice disappeared from Wittenburg, a town near Hamburg. Yet, these incidents seemed minor compared to a January 2018 heist in Freiburg, where 44 tons of chocolate were stolen from an industrial park.
When Bugs Became the Target
Even the world of insects wasn’t spared from unusual thefts. The Philadelphia Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion, once the first bug zoo in the U.S., became a headline-grabbing site after a mysterious disappearance in August 2018. Dr. John Cambridge discovered his tanks and shelves completely empty, with thousands of live bugs missing.
The incident led to a four-part TV documentary and heated arguments among staff over who was responsible. Meanwhile, in October 2024, London’s Neal’s Yard faced a different kind of crisis. The cheese firm was duped by fraudsters posing as a French wholesale distributor, resulting in the theft of 950 wheels of cheddar—22 tons of cheese valued at around £300,000.
These stories, ranging from chocolate to cheese, remind us that the most peculiar heists often capture our imagination more than the flashiest ones. The scale and simplicity of the crimes highlight the creativity of criminals and the unexpected ways theft can disrupt everyday life.
