Christa Pike Speaks After Failed Tennessee Execution

Sandego.net – In Christa Pike in first public comments since Tennessee’s failed execution attempt, she described lasting physical pain, emotional trauma and isolation. Pike said recovery after the September 30 procedure has not restored her life to normal.

Pike, 50, survived after receiving two doses of pentobarbital and was taken to a hospital. Her attorneys said she was placed on a ventilator and that they initially feared she might not survive. She later regained consciousness and began speaking and walking with assistance.

In a statement dictated to her legal team, Pike said her injuries remain severe.

“There hasn’t been a moment since that night when I haven’t been in pain. My body hurts. My arms hurt. My hands hurt. My throat hurts. I still struggle to speak.”

She said the harm extends beyond physical symptoms.

“And the pain isn’t just physical. There is pain in my mind and in my soul.”

Christa Pike in First Public Statement Describes Recovery

Pike had been scheduled to die for the 1995 killing of her classmate, Colleen Slemmer, who was beaten and stabbed. She said she had prepared herself for execution but instead woke up in a hospital feeling disoriented and in pain.

“Healing is not the same as being okay.”

The case is expected to lead to a legal fight over whether Tennessee can seek another execution. The Death Penalty Information Center has said Pike is the only person known to have survived the injection of lethal chemicals during an execution.

After 10 days of hospital treatment, Pike returned to prison earlier in October and continued receiving medical care, according to her lawyers. She said she has largely been separated from others in the prison medical ward.

“Since that night, I have been largely isolated in the prison’s medical ward, away from other people and the human connections that mean so much to me.”

Pike said the separation recalls the 28 years she spent in solitary confinement.

“That isolation brings its own kind of pain. I spent 28 years in solitary confinement and much of what I am experiencing today is a repeat of that condition.”

Tennessee Orders Investigation Into Failed Procedure

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee ordered an investigation after the execution procedure failed and indefinitely delayed another execution planned for later this year. The inquiry is expected to examine how the procedure unfolded and why Pike survived despite receiving two doses of pentobarbital.

Lee has said he does not currently support commuting Pike’s sentence. Speaking in Nashville, he said she remains incarcerated under Tennessee law unless courts determine otherwise.

“She’s still incarcerated under the laws of the State of Tennessee. I suspect her sentence will be the same as before unless determined otherwise by the courts.”

Any future effort to carry out the death sentence is likely to face litigation over medical care, prison conditions, constitutional protections and execution procedures.

Victim’s Family Seeks Focus on Colleen Slemmer

The aftermath has also distressed Slemmer’s family, who have said attention should not move away from the victim. May Martinez, Slemmer’s mother, said the state owes her an apology and expressed frustration that the failed execution has drawn focus from her daughter’s death.
