The vessel, Virgo Transport 8, was heading toward Banjarmasin from Surabaya when contact was interrupted. Surabaya, in East Java, is Indonesia’s second-largest city, while Banjarmasin is the provincial capital of South Kalimantan on Borneo island.

Its last reported location placed the ship in the Java Sea, roughly 148 kilometers, or 92 miles, from a pier in Banjarmasin. There were no immediate indications of casualties as the search operation got underway.

Operations Post Established in Banjarmasin

The Search and Rescue Office in Banjarmasin received notification that the vessel had suffered a communications failure during its voyage. Rescue crews were then sent toward the area where the ship was last known to be operating.

Arianto Ardi, the operations chief for Banjarmasin’s rescue agency, confirmed that authorities had lost contact with the vessel and said an emergency response was being coordinated from Trisakti.

“We have established an operations post at Trisakti,” Arianto said.

An operations post can serve as the coordination point for rescue teams, helping authorities organize search activity, relay updates and manage incoming information while vessels and personnel work in a large maritime area.

Bad Weather Reported During Voyage

Authorities said the ship’s operator notified them of the incident after learning that Virgo Transport 8 had encountered poor weather conditions. At this stage, the reported problem was a loss of communication, rather than a confirmed sinking or other specific emergency involving the ship.
