Dogs found crammed in living room ‘doing really well’, says RSPCA
Dogs Rescued from Overcrowded Home Thriving, Reports RSPCA
The RSPCA confirmed that approximately 250 dogs, rescued from a UK property with cramped living conditions, are currently “in good health” following their release, as reported to the BBC. The charity noted that the poodle crossbreeds, discovered in January at an unspecified location, had “quickly escalated beyond control due to challenging family situations” prior to the rescue.
“In an update to BBC Breakfast, Lee Hopgood, the RSPCA’s North of England operational superintendent, remarked that ‘unexpectedly, the dogs are in excellent condition and flourishing’.”
Despite their initial discovery in suboptimal conditions—marked by “coated fur that was matted and crusty”—many required medical attention. The RSPCA adopted 87 of the rescued canines, while the remaining were entrusted to Dogs Trust. Following treatment and behavioral support, “numerous dogs have since found new homes, thriving in their permanent environments,” stated a Dogs Trust representative. Some still reside under the charity’s care, “such as those who delivered puppies during their time with us,” the spokesperson noted.
A recent rescue included Boone, a poodle-cross breed, who was adopted by Dermot Murphy, a former RSPCA inspectorate commissioner, and appeared on BBC Breakfast on Thursday. The RSPCA attributed the situation to factors such as mental health challenges, the ongoing cost of living crisis, or unscrupulous breeding practices. In this case, the charity opted against legal action, citing the “extreme vulnerability” of the owners in their statement released on Wednesday.
Addressing claims that a “disturbing” image of the rescue—depicting dozens of dogs crammed into a living room—was artificially generated, the RSPCA clarified it was a genuine photograph. The image captures the “overwhelming reality” of multi-animal incidents, which have surged by 70% in England and Wales since 2021, according to the charity.
All the rescued canines were poodle-cross breeds, commonly referred to as “doodles.” These dogs have gained significant popularity recently, ranking among the top three crossbreeds in a 2025 Dogs Trust survey. Additionally, in November, the RSPCA documented the rescue of 80 dogs, primarily chihuahuas, pomeranians, and other crossbreeds, from a Bedfordshire residence.
