Four people die in Channel crossing attempt, French authorities say

French officials in Calais confirmed that four individuals lost their lives during an English Channel crossing attempt near northern France. The incident occurred off the coast of Boulogne, between the beaches of Équihen and Écault, south of the city. A taxi boat sank today, leading to emergency operations, as reported by French media on Thursday morning.

Rescue teams, including firefighters and intensive care units, arrived at the scene at 07:30 local time (06:30 BST). A press conference is scheduled to provide further details. Local media noted that approximately 30 people are currently receiving medical attention.

“The situation is still being assessed and remains subject to change,” said French officials in a press statement shared with Reuters.

Weather and crossing trends

Recent weather conditions in the Channel have improved after weeks of challenging seas. However, crossings typically rise during summer months. Over the past three years, the number of people arriving in the UK via small boats has fluctuated, with 41,472 crossings recorded in 2025.

From January 1 to March 26, 2026, 4,441 people made the journey from France to the UK. This figure is 33% lower than the 6,642 crossings during the same period in 2025, though officials suggest weather variations may have influenced the difference.
