“This does not smell right,” the Rev. Al Sharpton declared at a Friday news conference. “Some people are saying, ‘Reverend, are y’all bringing in race?’ Well, we’re not bringing in race. But we’re not discounting race, either, because we do not know. So, to tell us, ‘Don’t rush to judgment saying it was racist’ is fine. Crump described it as bizarre for a teenager to be without his phone and noted that the parents managed to locate the device before police did. Location history data retrieved from the phone has left the family with additional questions. They also voiced concerns that messages or images may have been deleted from the device.
Speculation has also centered on whether Wells was involved in an altercation shortly before being reported missing. Christine Wonsley emphasized that her son was not a confrontational individual and actively avoided bickering. “Nolan was not someone who liked fights, physical fights. He really didn’t even like arguments,” she said.
