Confrontation Details Emerge
Sandego.net – California’s Democratic Representative Ro Khanna described a tense encounter that unfolded during his recent journey through the West Bank. According to the congressman, Israeli settlers armed with American-made rifles, alongside Israel Defense Forces personnel, prevented his movement for more than sixty minutes. The confrontation occurred earlier this week, and Khanna addressed the situation publicly on Saturday when speaking with CNN.
The congressman has urged Israeli authorities to pursue legal action against both the civilian settlers and military soldiers involved in the incident. This episode came shortly after Khanna visited an elementary school that had been damaged by extremist Israeli settlers, adding another layer to his observations of the region.
“I see these young men brandishing M4s, circling, circling our vans, cursing us out in Hebrew and Arabic, which I didn’t understand, and filming us, laughing at us, wiping our windows while doing that, blockading us,” Khanna recounted.
Soldiers Side with Settlers
After the initial confrontation, Khanna and his accompanying team reached out to the United States Embassy and awaited the arrival of Israeli military personnel. When four IDF soldiers eventually reached the location, the congressman claimed they aligned themselves with the settlers rather than supporting the American delegation.
“And that’s when I got actually nervous and scared that there could be some incident,” Khanna explained. “Our security person goes and talks to the IDF soldiers and they said, ‘We don’t care that there’s an American in the car. We don’t care about a congressman. We don’t care what the American embassy is saying,'”
Broader Context of Regional Tensions
The West Bank has experienced increased settler violence in recent times, with some episodes featuring Israeli soldiers remaining passive observers. This pattern coincides with the Israeli government’s accelerated expansion of settlements across the territory. On the same Saturday as Khanna’s public remarks, Israeli Police reported that four settlers had been detained following an assault on CNN journalists and other media personnel in the occupied West Bank.
Khanna stated that he and his team were eventually released after the United States Embassy engaged in communication with a senior Israeli government official. He noted that advance notification had been provided to both the American Embassy and Israeli authorities regarding his planned visit.
Official Responses and Political Implications
CNN has contacted multiple sources for their perspectives on the incident, including the Israeli government, the White House, and the State Department. The IDF issued a statement clarifying its position on the matter.
“Upon receiving the report, IDF troops were dispatched to the scene, quickly dispersed the Israeli civilians, and reopened the blocked road. The IDF soldiers operating in the area did not take part in blocking the road,” the military organization stated.
American backing of Israel has become a significant topic during the midterm elections, especially within Democratic ranks. Khanna, a progressive legislator considering a run for the presidency in 2028, has expressed criticism of Israeli policies. He has characterized Israel’s military operations in Gaza following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks as constituting genocide.
“I know in this country there’s a lot of understandable debate and emotion about the situation in the Middle East,” Khanna remarked. “But I believe any American, no matter how much they care and love Israel, if they go and spend a few days in the West Bank and see the reality, would be horrified.”
The congressman explained that his motivation for visiting the West Bank stemmed from a desire for American politicians to gain an unfiltered, comprehensive understanding of the occupation from Palestinian perspectives. He praised the United States Embassy for being “very helpful” during the ordeal. While Khanna has not yet spoken with the White House or State Department, he intends to request their comments regarding potential actions the Israeli government might take concerning the four IDF soldiers involved.
