Spain formally dismisses ambassador to Israel amid tensions with Tel Aviv
Spain has removed Ana Sálomon from her position as ambassador to Israel, effective March 11, 2026. The action was confirmed in the official gazette following approval by the Council of Ministers. As a result, the Spanish embassy in Tel Aviv will operate under the authority of a chargé d’affaires, reducing its diplomatic rank. This shift marks a significant step in the evolving relationship between the two nations.
The move is viewed as a reciprocal response to Israel’s earlier decision to recall its ambassador from Madrid. In May 2024, Israel had withdrawn its envoy following Spain’s recognition of a Palestinian state. While a replacement was anticipated, the initial candidate stepped down to accept a different assignment, leaving the ambassadorial post vacant. The current diplomatic leadership in Madrid is led by Chargé d’Affaires Dana Erlich.
Sálomon’s recall in September 2025 followed Spain’s alignment with Palestinian claims of a genocide in Gaza. Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar criticized Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, labeling his policies as antisemitic. This led to the suspension of two Spanish ministers from entering Israel, deepening existing diplomatic rifts.
Spain’s dismissal of its ambassador signals a broader reassessment of its ties with Tel Aviv. The decision reflects the ongoing impact of the 7 October 2023 Hamas attacks on relations, which Israel has responded to with military action. The reciprocal nature of the moves underscores the growing friction between the two countries in recent months.
“This is a clear expression of solidarity with the Palestinian cause,” said an unnamed official in a statement to the press.
