Boy, 14, dies in e-bike crash with car as parents warn ‘this is reason why they are banned from the roads’
A 14-year-old boy has lost his life after his electric motorbike collided with a car in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. His 15-year-old friend, who was riding as a passenger, survived the accident but is now in hospital with serious injuries.
The incident occurred on Newbold Road around 8:30pm last Thursday. Finley Dawson, the 14-year-old, was thrown from the e-bike during the collision and sustained fatal wounds. Despite emergency efforts, he passed away the following day.
Derbyshire police stated that the driver of the Kia Sportage involved in the crash is considered a witness and is helping investigators. No arrests have been made at this time.
“There is a reason these bikes are restricted on roads, and tragically, Finley has given his life as proof.”
The families of both boys have issued a statement highlighting the dangers of e-bikes being used on roads. They urged young riders to consider the risks before taking to the streets.
According to UK regulations, individuals must be at least 16 and possess a valid driving license to operate an electric motorbike on public roads. However, pedal-assisted electric bikes can be ridden by anyone over 14, provided their power output does not exceed 250 watts.
